How to Protect Your Health in a Hard Season
Waiting can wear you out.
The sleepless nights. The anxious thoughts. The heaviness in your chest when yet another month passes without an answer. The temptation to numb the pain with food, screen time, or isolation.
If you are in a long season of waiting, you may have noticed that your health is suffering.
At the Woman in Waiting International Network, we believe that wellness is not optional – it is essential. That is why the first letter of our W.A.I.T.S. Program stands for Wellness & Health.
Why Wellness Matters in Waiting
When you are waiting, your body and mind are under stress. Prolonged uncertainty triggers the same physiological responses as physical danger. Your cortisol levels rise. Your sleep suffers. Your immune system weakens.
But here is what many women miss: how you wait affects how you enter your next season.
If you emerge from waiting exhausted, burnt out, and emotionally fractured, you will not have the strength to steward the breakthrough when it comes. God is not just preparing your destination – He is preparing you for the destination.
And that preparation includes your health.
The W.A.I.T.S. Approach to Wellness
The Wellness & Health program area focuses on four key dimensions:
1. Emotional Health Support
You do not have to pretend you are fine. Our program provides:
- Counselling referrals for anxiety, depression, and grief
- Support groups where you can share honestly without judgment
- Workshops on processing disappointment, loss, and delayed hopes
2. Physical Wellness Guidance
Your body is a temple, even in waiting. We offer:
- Seminars on nutrition and rest during stressful seasons
- Exercise encouragement and accountability
- Preventive health education
3. Mental Resilience Training
Waiting requires mental toughness. You will learn:
- How to manage stress without escaping
- How to develop healthy thought patterns
- How to overcome discouragement when it lingers
4. Restoration Retreats
Sometimes you need to get away. Our healing retreats provide:
- A safe, nurturing environment
- Biblical teaching and prayer ministry
- Professional counselling support
- Time to rest and be still
Simple Wellness Practices You Can Start Today
While you consider joining the full W.A.I.T.S. Program, here are three small steps to protect your health right now:
1. Create a sleep rhythm. Going to bed and waking up at the same time – even on weekends – stabilizes your mood and reduces anxiety.
2. Talk to someone. Isolation magnifies pain. Find one trusted woman who will let you be honest without trying to fix you.
3. Move your body daily. A 15-minute walk, gentle stretching, or dancing to worship music in your living room changes your brain chemistry.
You Are Allowed to Take Care of Yourself
Many women in waiting feel guilty about self-care. They think, “If I rest, I am not trusting God enough.” Or, “I should be praying more, not sleeping more.”
But here is the truth: rest is not rebellion. Self-care is not selfish.
Jesus withdrew to lonely places to pray and rest. He slept in a boat during a storm. He knew that His body and soul needed care to fulfill His mission.
So do you.
